Carlos Ghosn Hints at a GT-R Based Infiniti…Sort Of

Nissan’s luxury offspring, Infiniti, already has a sports car, the G37 coupe. But lately there has been a lot of talk about cooperating with Red Bull now that the latter is considering entering the car-making business.

In addition, Nissan’s boss, Carlos Ghosn, is teasing us with a rather exciting prospect: an Infiniti version of the amazing Nissan GT-R. At least that’s what he hinted at during an interview in CAR magazine.

Slick Thieves Ride Off with a…Dozen Brand-New Nissans in Canada!

Unless you are enjoying a Fast and Furious flick on the couch, in real life, you rarely hear about car thieves stealing a bunch of vehicles from the same owner.

Yet this happened in the Canadian city of Calgary where some very slick bandits made off with not one, not two but a dozen (!) brand new vehicles from a local Nissan dealership.

The Calgary police said that the thieves broke in the Sunridge Nissan dealership on Sunday , July 24, and stole the keys from 20 different models including sedans, SUVs and trucks, but managed to drive away with "only" 12 vehicles.

An extremely violent accident involving what appears to be a Nissan 350Z (we could be wrong on the model though) that flew over a wall at a parking lot and which could have ended in a drama, surprisingly turned into the most awesome parking job we have ever seen on film. The driver even came out unhurt and checked the car as it was a mere fender bender!

Don’t believe us? Hit the jump and check out the spectacular video for yourself.

We’ve seen some insanely modified Nissan GT-R R35s, but Chicago-based tuning house AMS Performance, has really lifted the bar with its newest creation, the ALPHA 12.

The heavily tuned Nissan GT-R ALPHA 12, which is still in the development and testing phase, was placed on a dyno where it produced an incredible 1,309-horsepower and 994 lb-ft (1,384Nm) of peak torque at all four wheels!

Top Gear has a Blast Driving the 2012 Nissan GT-R

One of the highlights in the fourth episode of Top Gear’s 17th season that aired in Britain this past weekend was the test of the 530HP and 612 Nm (451 lb/ft) 2012 Nissan GT-R. Jeremy Clarkson clearly had a blast driving the updated version of Nissan’s twin-turbocharged, four-wheel drive supercar and, unusually for him, almost ran out of expletives. Read more »

The Price of Success: Nissan Raises 2012 Leaf Prices Between $2,420 and $3,530!

Well, that didn’t take long did it? Only a year after launch and while the Leaf is leading the eco-friendly sales race against GM’s Chevrolet Volt, Nissan today announced that it is lifting the base price of the 2012 model year version of its pure-electric hatchback between 7 and 11 percent, depending on the trim grade!

In particular, the entry-level 2012 Leaf SV is now priced at $35,200, or 7.38% more than the 2011MY’s $32,780 sticker. The higher grade Lead SL enters the 2012MY priced at $37,250, an increase of $3,530 or 11.3% more over the 2011MY.

Rising Yen won’t Hurt Nissan’s Sales, says Ghosn

Nissan CEO, Carlos Ghosn, has predicted that Japan’s second biggest carmaker will achieve its sales targets, despite the yen’s 9.6% climb over the US dollar in the past year. However Ghosn admitted that the strength of the Yen may cause problems: “The high yen is definitely a headwind. What I worry about is not just Nissan, but Japanese manufacturers losing their motivation to maintain production in Japan”. Read more »

Auto pricing website TrueCar studied the car buying behaviour of four million Gen Y (18 to 27 year-old) over a twenty-four month period and here’s what they found.

Video: Nissan LEAF Climbs the Pikes Peak

Last month, Nobuhiro “Monster” Tajima broke his own record at the Pikes Peak Hill Climb with a sub 10 minutes time in a 910-horsepower modified Suzuki SX4 racecar.

Now, Nissan’s first all-electric car, the LEAF, has tackled the 156 turns of the “Race to the Clouds”. Naturally, “Monster” Tajima can rest assured that his record remains safe.

That’s not to say that the LEAF driven by Chad Hord didn’t record a respectable time. After all, 14 minutes and 33 seconds with an average speed of 51.2 mph (82.4 km/h) is not to be laughed at for an EV that used just 46% of its charge to cover the demanding 12.42 miles (20 km) hill climb.

Watch the LEAF climb the Pikes Peak after the jump.

Caught on Video: Nissan GT-R Crashing into Parked Cars in Moscow

A crazy car crash that took place in Moscow, Russia, on July 6, 2011, was caught on film by a pair of security cameras. The person responsible for the catastrophic scene you see in these aftermath photos that were shot on location is the driver of a black Nissan GT-R.

From what we can tell, the GT-R driver was either street racing with another car or simply trying out the full potential of his high-performance sports coupe on the streets of Moscow. Whatever the case, he failed to steer left after passing a black vehicle from the right and ended up crashing into three parked vehicles.

The force of the impact was so severe that the parked cars were literally thrown into the air as if they toys. Watch the security cam tapes of the accident in the videos after the break.

U.K.’s Auto Industry to Young People: Be an Engineer!

Twenty-three of the U.K.’s car and component factories have opened their doors to teachers and students alike in a renewed bid to entice young people into automotive and manufacturing engineering. At the annual summit of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Tony Walker – Toyota Motor Manufacturing U.K.’s deputy managing director – said:

“The industry today is hi-tech. There are no oily rags. There are no smoke stacks. It is an inspirational and an aspirational place to be.”

In fact, carmakers are eager to point out just how fun and lucrative engineering can be. It’s all part of the U.K. government’s push to shift its focus away from financial services after the deadly Global Financial Crisis of 2007.

Nissan Leaf Outsells Chevy Volt in Electric Car Battle During the first half of 2011

The battle for supremacy in the electric car category has begun –even though at present there are only two prime contestants. According to Bloomberg, the Nissan LEAF sold 3,875 cars the first half of the year, compared to 2,745 of GM’s Volt over the same period.

From January through May, the Volt was only 17 cars behind the Leaf, but in the following month, sales of the Volt plunged to just 561 cars, while those of the LEAF took off with a record 1,708 units, giving Nissan’s EV the lead. The LEAF costs $33,000 before a $7,500 federal tax credit, while the Volt costs $41,000 before government incentives.

2012 Nissan NV Series Cargo Vehicle

The new Nissan commercial vehicles lineup comes in basically two models: standard roof, and high roof. Both models offer engines of 4.0 L V6 and 5.6 L V8. The V8 has 317 horsepower and 385 lb-ft and the V6 has 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft. Since I drove mostly the standard roof 1500 S with a V6, I will focus primarily on that vehicle.

The standard model comes with a five-speed automatic transmission. The engine-speed-sensitive power-assisted steering amalgamates easily with heavy-duty fourwheel disc brakes resting on 17- inch steel wheels.
Standard power mirrors with convex spotter mirror and an easy see-through broad front windshield
makes front and back as well as peripheral views better, allowing the driver an additional comfort to the
driving experience.

2012 Nissan NV

The seating is for two passengers, offering four-way adjustable front seats with a premium clothseat trim with waterproofing feature and wear-resistant patches. Upfitter and telematics prewiring, and AM/FM/CD audio system w/aux-in, provide helpful entertainment while six cargo Dring mounting points and multiple integrated reinforced mounting points provide cargo security.

2011 marks Nissan’s 75th year in the commercial industry, which was a surprise to me. Nissan CVs are currently sold in over 75 percent of world markets including Japan, China, Mexico, Russia, Europe, and the Middle East. In 2010 sales exceeded 700K units. In fact commercial vehicles represent 20 percent of Nissan’s global volume.

2012 Nissan NV

The 2012 Nissan NV will initially be found in 247 active dealers out of 1,058 Nissan dealers. Target is to have 300 by the end of 2012. The Nissan NV is built on a solid foundation for a real work truck experience. It has a rugged bodyon- frame construction with a durable, all-new fully boxed frame with rear wheel drive that has up to 9,500 pounds towing capacity (V8 engine-equipped). The 2012 Nissan NV standard roof measures 83.9” in height while the high roof NV measures 105.0”. The length is 240.6” and the wheelbase is 146.1”. The width is 79.9”, and it is 102.8” wide with mirrors.

2012 Nissan NV

The standard platform has 234.1 cu. ft. cargo volume and 76.9” max cargo height. There is 120.0” cargo length at floor, 118.8” length at beltline, and 54.3” cargo width between wheelhouses. Nissan wanted to build a commercial vehicle to meet the needs of the working public, offering some features that make the job easier.
The cab of the 2012 Nissan NV is more like an office than an ordinary truck cab. You have a class-exclusive available center console which provides lockable integrated storage featuring the ability to fit letter-size files
and a laptop.

2012 Nissan NV Series

You can get two 120 V power outlets, one in the center console and one near the rear door on the D-pillar. On the high roof model there is even an additional overhead storage compartment. Available technology packages can be added with Bluetooth handsfree phone system, XM satellite radio, iPod connectivity, navigation system, and rear-view monitor. The base price for the standard model is $24,590. The E-Series, which has a few more features, is $26,055. The high model has a base price of $27,990.

2011 Nissan JUKE Best Peformance and High GPS System

In 2011 Nissan JUKE. Small, with a big bite, it lays claim to an all-new breed: the Turbocharged Sport Cross. The intentions are clear. Ride high, stand out, and move quickly. The turbocharged engine delivers serious boost when you need it and sips fuel when you don’t, while an innovative All-Wheel Drive system turns power into grip. Everything you thought a vehicle was just got turned on its head. JUKE. It’s a whole new way to move through the world. And you’re invited.

The 2011 Nissan Juke packs a few surprises. A small 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine is standard, but thanks to turbocharging and direct injection it cranks out 188 horsepower, more than the normally aspirated 2.5-liter engine in the Nissan Rogue. Connected to a manual transmission or an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT), the four-cylinder turbo makes the Juke one of the quickest small cars around while still being pretty frugal with gas. 2011 Nissan Juke is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-4 engine that sends 188 hp and 177 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels. A CVT is standard on the S trim. The SV and SL offer a choice of either a six-speed manual or the CVT.

2011 Nissan JUKE

2011 Nissan Juke Engine Simultaneously, we've come to respect Nissan's take on the genre, as its XTronic family of CVTs tends to behave more like traditional torque-converter automatics (at least in later variations), with the included six driver-selectable 'speeds' furthering the illusion. As we've seen in the past with the Murano and Maxima, it's possible to deliver a sportier-than-average driving experience in a CVT-equipped vehicle, and that's exactly the case here. There's good power on tap at all times, and calling for 'shifts' via the manual gearlever detent results in swift action. Use of the CVT also enables front-wheel drive models to return 27 miles per gallon in the city and 32 on the highway. While Nissan didn't offer any acceleration times, we suspect the Juke will hit 60 miles per hour in the low seven-second range.

2011 Nissan JUKE
The 2011 Nissan Juke interior with the same sporty and spunky spirit as its sheetmetal, as porting over the Versa's sober interior would've been a disappointment. On the contrary, the cabin is a lively place, beginning with the bulbous painted transmission tunnel that's available in either silver or red. Said to be inspired by the gas tank on a motorcycle, we just think it's cool and appreciate that the gearshift is located high and within easy reach. Also welcoming are the easy-to-read analog gauges, small-diameter three-spoke wheel swiped from the 370Z and surprisingly supportive cloth seats (leather is standard on the range-topping SL), though the gray fabric on our tester seemed like a dirt magnet.

2011 Nissan JUKE

The New 2011 Nissan Juke Designers embodied pure adrenaline, taking a cue from the flowing streamlined fuselage of sport bikes to craft the sleek appearance of the unique center console. Torque vectoring All-Wheel Drive agility and handling meets Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG) turbocharged performance. The Integrated Control (I-CON) system provides the driver with a unique connection to their ride.

2011 Nissan Leaf Reviews Specs Prices and Pictures

The forthcoming 2011 Nissan Leaf hatchback will move the electric car much closer to the real world, and well beyond the few boutique electric vehicles available to consumers now. The Leaf will almost certainly be first in the next-generation of pure electric cars from a large volume, mainstream automobile manufacturer. It runs on batteries without a combustion engine to supplement its electric motor or generate electricity, and it's designed for typical drivers to use every day. The Nissan Leaf should be available to consumers in the United States before the end of 2010, according to Nissan.

Slightly larger than the familiar Nissan Versa subcompact, the zero-emissions Leaf is a peppy car with room for five and good cargo space. Its 100-mile range surpasses the daily needs of all but the furthest traveling commuters, and it's loaded with things intended to make ownership even easier. The secret to the Leaf, and perhaps the closest thing to a breakthrough, is hidden in its battery pack. Unless the widely touted Chevy Volt hybrid beats it to market, the Leaf will be the first volume-produced car with lithium-ion batteries. Now familiar in laptops, mobile phones and other small appliances, Li-ion batteries were long considered poorly suited for automotive applications. Nissan, though, has been developing them for the purpose jointly with NEC electronics since 1992.

The Leaf's battery is actually an array of laminated lithium-ion sheets manufactured from manganese. Each sheet is a 12-by-10 inch rectangle, about half an inch thick, stacked in metalencased modules weighing a total of 395 pounds. Nissan says the Li-ion batteries have twice the storage capacity of any batteries used in current automotive applications. They charge and operate at lower temperatures than lead-acid or ni-cad batteries, according to engineers, and after five years of daily drain cycles, they retain 80 percent of original capacity. The value of the Li-ion battery pack is simple enough: It gives the Leaf a range of 160 kilometers per plug-in charge, or a tick under 100 miles, in the typical urban driving cycle.

According to Department of Transportation data, 98 percent of all American drivers drive less than 100 miles per day. The compact Li-ion modules gave designers great flexibility in creating the Leaf. The batteries fit
in a purpose-designed electric vehicle frame, stacked between the wheels under the interior floor. The design adds rigidity to the Leaf as whole, and it keeps weight evenly distributed over all four wheels. Most importantly, the batteries take virtually no volume from the conventional cabin space.

Those batteries are packaged in a swoopy five-door reminiscent of the Versa, only prettier and more aero smooth. Leafs already shown by Nissan have been very close to production trim, with a smartly designed interior centered on a Scandinavian-looking stack of touch switches. The 2011 Nissan Leaf has slightly more interior volume than the Versa, with comfortable room for four adults. The trunk area dips deep behind the batteries, so there's plenty of room for gear even when the folding rear seat is occupied.

The 2011 Nissan Leaf is powered by a synchronous AC motor delivering about 107 horsepower (80 kW) and 206 pound-feet of torque through a single-gear transmission to the front wheels. We took a short drive in one of Nissan's test cars on a closed track, and were pleasantly surprised with the results. The Leaf responds immediately to movement on the power pedal, with stimulating, steady acceleration up to a top speed of about 90 miles per hour. It's smooth beyond compactcar expectations, and quiet, as one might guess.
The Nissan Leaf charges from a fully depleted state in 16 hours on standard 110-volt home current, according to Nissan engineers. With 220 current (like the typical electric dryer), it charges in eight hours. Nissan has also developed a DC quick charge station for fleet and public use that fills the batteries to 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes.

Every Nissan Leaf will be equipped with a navigation system and vehicle-specific information exchange software. With one button, the navigation map shows the radius of the Leaf's range according to the current charge level. The driver can enter a specific destination, and the system will calculate whether there's sufficient juice remaining to reach it. The map will also show known public charging stations, as it might show gas stations in a conventional car, as more public charging stations come on line. A Leaf owner can program charging time in his or her garage to take advantage of off-peak rates. The owner can also program the climate-control system to start operating while the Leaf is plugged in, saving the battery for travel. These and other operations, such as checking the state of the Leaf's charge, can be accomplished remotely with a cell phone.

Nissan is still a bit vague about its rollout plan for the Leaf, if it is indeed called the Leaf when it goes on sale in the United States. The company says the car should be available for fleet customers in the second half of 2010, with general retail sales in key markets like California shortly thereafter. Nissan's next generation of Li-ion batteries, which may double the car's range, according to the company, could be ready by 2012, when the Leaf should be available at dealerships nationwide. An educated guess puts the retail price between $24,000 and $30,000. The batteries alone currently cost $10,000 to manufacture, according to one Nissan engineer. At the retail level, the battery pack will likely be leased to the Leaf buyer, so its cost won't necessarily be reflected in the car's price.
