Hot News: BMW M2?
Likely proud of its achievements with the recent 1 Series M Coupe, BMW’s M Division is now planning its next attack: the BMW M2. A new report suggests that the company will develop a high-performance version of the 2014 2 Series, which could go head-to-head with the likes of the Porsche Cayman and Audi TT RS.
Auto Express reports that the BMW M2 was conceived after the success of the 1 Series M Coupe. Like the 1M and all models of the forthcoming 2 Series, the M2 will be rear-wheel drive. Engine possibilities potentially include a new, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six good for 350 hp, or the tri-turbo inline-six rumored for use in the X3 M that is said to produce up to 449 hp.
The M2 will use the M DCT dual-clutch transmission and — like the 1 Series M — nab the brakes (and possibly suspension) from the big-brother M3. AE says BMW will trim the car’s weight by making extensive use of carbon-fiber reinforced plastics.
Like its 1 Series inspiration, the M2 will come as a coupe and will wear aggressive new fascias and interior styling. It will reportedly go on sale in the U.K. by 2015.
AE also says that, after launching the next-generation M3, BMW’s M Division will introduce a supercar to rival the Lamborghini Aventador — but we’ll believe that only when we see it.
