Shanghai Show 2011 Highlights: 2012 Roewe W5
This is the new Roewe W5, a Ssangyong Kyron based SUV revealed today at the Shanghai motor show - but reports that it could be rebadged as an MG and sold globally are wide of the mark.
The car is being built as part of a co-operation between SAIC and Ssangyong, and will be powered by the same 1.8T petrol engine that power's the Roewe 550 and 750.
It will launch at the end of this year, and is 17mm wider and 14mm higher than the Kyron.
SAIC has previously announced plans to develop an SUV that can be sold as an MG, but its licence agreement with Ssangyong prevents it selling the W5 outside of China.
SAIC had also previously planned to launch a Roewe badged version of the Ssangyong Chairman saloon, named the Roewe 950. However, the plan was put on ice after Ssangyong’s bankruptcy last year.
